Our thoughts from the election/Nuestra reacción sobre estas elecciones

Our thoughts from the election.

I have struggled to write this message. I have been trying to find the words to express the pain, disappointment, fear and anger – I might not find those words any time soon but I wanted to make sure I reached out to all of you.

This election has been hard, it has been a hard day for our community, a day in which the country that I have proudly called home for the last 16 years elected a racist to the highest office. I fear for my family, our members, our community. I fear for my black and brown brothers and sisters.

As I work with the staff and members to process the outcome, I am clear that this time more than ever is the time for us to organize and to build power, not only to protect our community but to fight for the kind of country we want to live in and the country we all deserve.

I do want to recognize that on election night Colorado did deliver: we knocked on thousands of doors, talked to over 17 thousand voters and we won! Colorado rejected Trump and his ideas, and that was a direct result of all the work that so many of you did. We also had an incredible victory last night; we won an increase on the minimum wage by passing Amendment 70! This is a victory for thousands of Coloradans who will get a much needed raise starting January 1, 2017 (Amendment 70 increases the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020) – this victory happened because we organized, we went door to door and we engaged voters on this important issue. Thank you to everyone who was involved in our efforts this election!

Colorado People’s Action (and our sister issue organization, Colorado People’s Alliance) were created to build power, to change politics, to hold elected officials accountable, fight for racial justice, to challenge corporations, corporate polluters, and those at the top and to win for our communities. We are not backing away from this vision! We have been around for only 11 months, and I am so proud of the work we’ve accomplished, so proud of all of our members, board and staff. Now more than ever we need you, we need you to join us in the fight for justice!
We look forward to building a powerful force of resistance with you!

In solidarity,
Lizeth Chacon
Executive Director

Nuestra reacción sobre estas elecciones.

lizeth for cpa blog
